Same Day Loans: Which Fees Are Normal and Which Mean a Scam

Stop sign warning against paying upfront fees
Quick answer: A genuine South African lender never asks you to pay before the loan is paid out. Normal fees on same day loans, such as the initiation fee and monthly service fee, are capped by law and appear in the written quote. A request for money first, for insurance, admin or “release”, is a scam.

“No upfront fees” is a promise that real lenders can keep and scammers love to break.

This guide separates the five fees you can expect on same day loans from the five that mean you should walk away, with a rand-by-rand example.

Which fees are normal on same day loans?

Under the National Credit Act, the law caps what a registered lender can charge on short-term credit. Five costs can appear on the quote:

CostWhat it is
InterestThe cost of borrowing, capped by law
Initiation feeA one-off setup fee, capped
Service feeA monthly admin fee, capped at R60
VAT15% on the fees
Credit life insuranceOnly if the lender adds it, and it must be on the quote

None of these is paid into a separate account before you get your money. All of them appear in the pre-agreement quote. See the guide to the pre-agreement quote for how to read one.

What does a real fee breakdown look like?

Here is a hypothetical R3,000 loan for one month at the legal maximums for a first short-term loan. It is a calculation, not a quote.

LineAmount
Interest (5%)R150.00
Initiation fee (R165 + 10% of R2,000)R365.00
Service feeR60.00
VAT on the fees (15%)R63.75
Total costR638.75

Every line has a name, a rule behind it and a place on the quote. A fee that does not fit this pattern is the one to question.

Note that the initiation fee can be deducted from the loan or added to it. If it is deducted, the amount that reaches you can be lower than the amount you borrowed. The quote has to show that.

Which 5 fees are scam fees?

These are the ones asked for before a loan arrives. None appears in a genuine quote.

  1. “Insurance” or “insurance deposit”. Paid to a person’s account to “secure” the loan.
  2. “Processing” or “admin” fees. Paid upfront to start the application.
  3. “Release of funds” or “clearance” fees. Demanded after you are told the loan is approved.
  4. “Tax clearance” fees. A made-up requirement that does not exist for a personal loan.
  5. “Refundable deposits”. Promised back, never returned.

Scammers often ask for a small amount first, then invent a new fee each time you pay. The NCR’s advice is simple: never pay an upfront fee.

Why is an upfront fee always a red flag?

A lender recovers its costs from you after it pays out, through repayments. It has no reason to ask you for money first.

Scammers do the opposite. They take your payment and disappear, or invent new fees to keep you paying.

How do you tell a real offer from a fake one?

  1. Check the lender on the NCR register.
  2. Ask for the quote. A real one lists every fee and the total repayment in rand.
  3. Watch where money flows. It should go from the lender to you first. If the first transaction is from you, stop.
  4. Test the contact details. Real lenders have a working website, a physical address and a phone number.
  5. Notice the tone. Pressure, secrecy and “limited time” are scam tactics.

Our guides to online loan scams and WhatsApp loan scams show the common patterns.

One short form.

What if you have already paid an upfront fee?

  1. Stop all further payments.
  2. Contact your bank immediately and ask whether the payment can be reversed.
  3. Keep screenshots, chats and proof of payment.
  4. Report it to the police and the National Credit Regulator.

Do not pay a “fee to recover your fee”. That is the same scam again.

What does “same day” really require?

Payout on the same day depends on the lender’s checks and your bank. It is possible and never guaranteed. Applying early on a business day with complete documents helps.

See same-day loans for what affects timing, and use this final check before you accept:

  • Do you know the total you will repay?
  • Does the instalment fit next to your regular costs?
  • Have you paid anything before receiving the money? If yes, why?

If any answer is unclear, wait. Our same-day loan without payslip page shows how reputable lenders explain their process.

How do the fees on same day loans grow with the amount?

The interest rises with the loan, and so does the initiation fee, but the service fee stays at R60 for a one-month loan. Here is each line for three loan sizes, at the legal maximums for a first one-month loan.

They are calculations from the NCR’s caps, not quotes.

LineR1,000R2,000R5,000
Interest (5%)R50R100R250
Initiation feeR165R265R565
Service feeR60R60R60
VAT (15% on fees)R33.75R48.75R93.75
Total costR308.75R473.75R968.75

If a quote for same day loans shows a line that does not match this pattern, such as a “processing fee” or a “collection fee”, ask the lender where it comes from in the agreement. A fee that cannot be explained should not be paid.

What does an upfront-fee scam sound like?

The pattern repeats, and knowing the script makes it easier to spot. Here is a hypothetical example of how it unfolds:

StageWhat you hearWhat is really happening
1“Your R5,000 loan is approved.”No assessment has happened
2“Pay R350 insurance to release it.”The first fee is the real goal
3“A clearance fee of R890 is needed.”A new fee appears after you paid
4“Pay R1,200 and we refund everything.”The scam is now escalating

At each step the amount is small compared with the loan on offer, so paying feels sensible. The loan never arrives. Stop at stage 2: no registered lender asks you to pay before it pays you.

Can you dispute a fee on genuine same day loans?

Yes. If a registered lender charged something that is not in your agreement, or more than the law allows, follow these steps:

  1. Ask for a statement that lists every charge on the account.
  2. Compare it with the agreement and quote. Highlight any line that is not in them.
  3. Write to the lender asking for an explanation or a refund, and keep a copy.
  4. Escalate if needed. The NCR and the free Credit Ombud both handle complaints about credit providers.

Keep the agreement, quote and proof of each payment. A calm written record is the strongest evidence you can bring.

Frequently asked questions

Are there really same day loans with no upfront fees?

Yes. Registered lenders do not charge you before paying out. Their fees are added to the loan or the repayments.

Can a lender deduct the initiation fee from the loan?

Yes, that can happen. The quote must show it, and the amount you receive may then be lower than the amount you borrowed.

What if a “lender” asks for a refundable deposit?

Treat it as a scam. Registered lenders do not ask for deposits to release loans.

Who can I report this to?

The National Credit Regulator, your bank and the police.

Can same day loans charge a fee for early repayment?

Check your agreement. The law allows you to settle early, and the lender must give you a settlement figure. Ask what it includes before you pay.

How do I know a fee is capped?

Compare it with the NCR’s published maximums for short-term credit: the initiation fee, the monthly service fee and interest. Anything else needs an explanation.
