R2,000 can fix a lot of problems: a car repair, a school bill, an overdue account. That is why people borrow it.
Here is what a R2000 loan costs at the legal maximums, and how the cost changes with the term.
What does a R2000 loan cost for one month?
This is an illustration for a first short-term loan in a calendar year, using the National Credit Regulator’s (NCR) caps. Your quote may be lower.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Borrowed | R2,000.00 |
| Interest (5% for one month) | R100.00 |
| Initiation fee (R165 plus 10% of R1,000) | R265.00 |
| Monthly service fee (up to) | R60.00 |
| VAT on the fees (15%) | R48.75 |
| Total to repay | R2,473.75 |
For one month, the cost is about 24% of what you borrowed. A lender that charges less than the maximum can save you real money, so compare quotes.

How does the term change a R2000 loan?
Interest and the monthly service fee keep running, so a longer term costs more. This table assumes equal capital repayments and the legal maximums.
| Term | Total cost | You repay | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | about R474 | about R2,474 | R2,474 |
| 2 months | about R593 | about R2,593 | about R1,296 |
| 3 months | about R712 | about R2,712 | about R904 |
| 6 months | about R1,069 | about R3,069 | about R511 |
Three months costs about R238 more than one month, and six months about R595 more. The instalment gets easier, but the total gets bigger.
Is a R2000 loan a good idea for a car repair or a bill?
Ask what the alternative costs. A late-payment fee of R150 is cheaper than a R474 loan. A disconnection plus reconnection fee might not be.
For a repair, ask the workshop for an instalment arrangement and get a second quote. For a bill, ask the provider for a payment plan before you borrow.
What are cheaper ways to get R2,000?
- Your employer. A salary advance is often free.
- The person you owe. Ask for a few extra days, or a split payment.
- Family or a stokvel. Agree the amount and date in writing.
- Selling something you do not need.
Our 24-hour plan for urgent cash shows the order to try these in.

What if you do need a R2000 loan?
- Check the lender on the NCR register.
- Get the written quote and find the total repayment.
- Make sure the due date falls after payday.
- Test the repayment against your budget with the loan affordability guide.
- Do not pay anything before payout.

Is borrowing R1,000 twice cheaper than a R2000 loan?
It is tempting to split a need into two smaller loans. The numbers say otherwise. Here are the maximum one-month costs, assuming the first loan is your first short-term loan this year and the second is a later one with the lower interest cap.
| Plan | Total cost |
|---|---|
| One R2000 loan | about R474 |
| Two R1,000 loans (first, then later) | about R598 |
Splitting costs about R124 more, because each loan carries its own initiation and service fee. It also means two repayments and two chances to miss one. If you need R2,000, ask for R2,000 once, or look for a way to reduce the amount.
How would the repayment sit in your month?
Here is a hypothetical household with R10,000 take-home pay and R7,200 of essentials, so R2,800 is free before the loan.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Free before the loan | R2,800 |
| R2000 loan repayment, one month | about R2,474 |
| Left after the loan | about R326 |
The loan fits on paper, but it leaves almost nothing for a surprise. If a small shock arrives, that household may need another loan. A three-month term lowers the payment to about R904 a month, yet costs about R238 more in total.
If neither feels safe, borrow less or look for another source.
What if you need R2,000 every month?
This is the question that matters most. Here is a hypothetical year of borrowing R2,000 each month at the legal maximums.
The first loan costs about R474, and the later ones about R434 each, because the interest cap falls to 3% after the first loan of the year.
| Period | Total cost of borrowing |
|---|---|
| One loan | about R474 |
| 12 loans in a year | about R5,245 |
That is over R5,000 in fees and interest, and the household is no better off at the end. Meanwhile, saving R200 a month builds R2,000 in ten months. If you recognise this pattern, the answer is not a better loan.
It is a budget that creates a gap, and the next step is a conversation with a debt counsellor. See debt review and how to budget.
How do you ask the person you owe for a different arrangement?
Many R2,000 problems can be solved with a message. Try:
“I have R___ available now and can pay the remaining R___ on the ___. Please confirm in writing that this settles the account without extra fees.”
Offer something concrete, and ask for the confirmation to be in writing. A repair shop, a school or a utility often prefers a plan to no payment at all.
What should you ask before you accept a R2000 loan quote?
Five questions turn a quote into a decision:
- What is the total I will repay, in rand, and on which date? For a first one-month R2000 loan, anything above about R2,474 is above the legal maximum.
- Is the initiation fee added to the loan or deducted from the amount I receive?
- Which debit date will be used, and does it fall after payday?
- What does a failed debit cost?
- What is the settlement figure if I repay early?
If a lender answers all five in writing, you can compare it fairly with another quote. If it avoids one, treat that as the answer, and walk away from the R2000 loan.
What should you do the day the R2,000 arrives?
Pay the bill or the repair for which you borrowed, and keep the receipt. Move the repayment amount, about R2,474 for a one-month loan at the maximums, to a separate account on your next payday, so it is there on the debit date.
Then put the due date in your phone with a reminder two days before. A R2000 loan is easy to manage when the repayment is set aside before you can spend it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a R2000 loan available?
Some lenders offer R2,000, and others start higher. Check the lender before you apply.
Can I get R2,000 with bad credit?
Some lenders consider weaker records. Expect a smaller amount or a higher price. Approval is not guaranteed.
How long will it take to be paid out?
Often the same day on a business day, but never guaranteed. See same-day loans.
What if I cannot repay on time?
Contact the lender before the due date and ask for a plan. See what to do when you cannot pay your debts.
Is it cheaper to take a R2000 loan for two months than one?
No. A longer term lowers the monthly payment, but the total cost rises because the service fee and interest keep running. At the legal maximums, two months costs about R593 against R474 for one.
Can I settle a R2000 loan early?
Yes. Ask for a settlement figure in writing and check what it includes before you pay.
