If your credit is already damaged, the question is not only whether you can get payday loans with bad credit. It is what the loan does to your record afterwards.
This guide explains how payday loans with bad credit can change your record, how long different entries last, and how to repay without making things worse.
Do payday loans with bad credit show on your record?
Many registered lenders report to the credit bureaus. What gets reported can include:
- That you have the loan, and its amount.
- Whether your instalments are paid on time.
- Whether you have missed payments or defaulted.
Not every lender reports in the same way, and you will not see the effect immediately. The only way to know is to read your credit report. You can request a free report once a year from each registered bureau. See free credit reports.
What helps and what hurts?
| Action | Likely effect |
|---|---|
| Pay every instalment on time | Builds a good payment history |
| Pay early | Can cut interest and shows reliability |
| Miss a payment | Can be reported and lower your score |
| Take several loans at once | Can look like financial stress |
| Default and ignore the lender | Can lead to legal action and a default listing |
One loan repaid on time is a small positive. One missed payment can outweigh it, because lenders pay close attention to recent problems.

How long does information stay on your record?
The National Credit Regulations set maximum periods for what a bureau may keep. The main ones are:
| Information | Stays for up to |
|---|---|
| Credit enquiries | 1 year |
| Payment history | 5 years |
| “Default” or “slow paying” labels | 1 year, or until 14 business days after you settle |
| Debt review flag | Until you get a clearance certificate |
These are maximums set in regulation 17, so a bureau may not keep an entry longer. Since 2020, civil court judgments and administration orders no longer appear on credit reports. See the National Credit Regulator for the current rules.
The practical point: a missed payment on a payday loan is not a life sentence. But the payment history it sits in can stay for years, so paying on time matters more than anything else.
How can you repay payday loans with bad credit safely?
- Check the debit date. Make sure it falls after your salary lands.
- Keep the money in the account. A returned debit can cost bank fees plus the lender’s fee.
- Set a reminder three days before the due date.
- Keep the agreement and proof of every payment.
- Pay early if you can. Ask for a settlement quote first. See settling a loan early.
If you are worried that a debit will fail, contact the lender before the date. It is easier to agree on a plan beforehand.
What if you miss a payment?
- Tell the lender immediately and ask for options.
- Do not take another loan only to cover the missed payment unless you have checked the cost.
- If a default letter arrives, read it carefully. For many credit agreements, a section 129 notice must come before legal action. See section 129 notice.
- If the charges look wrong, use the Credit Ombud.
Do not ignore calls and letters. Silence usually makes the problem bigger and more expensive.

Will a payday loan fix a poor credit score?
Not on its own. Payday loans with bad credit are not designed to build credit, and the price makes it a poor tool for the job.
The better steps are slow and dull: pay existing accounts on time, keep balances low and correct any errors. Our guides to building credit and improving a credit score explain how.
When should you avoid payday loans with bad credit altogether?
- When you have applied for debt review. By law you cannot take new credit.
- When you are behind on several accounts and need a plan, not another loan.
- When the money is for something that can wait.

How do you check what your record says before you borrow?
A lender reads your report, so read it first. You can request a free report once a year from each registered bureau. Go through it in this order:
| Section | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Personal details | Your name, ID number and address are correct |
| Accounts | Accounts you do not recognise, or balances that look wrong |
| Payment history | Late or missed payments, and the months they happened |
| Enquiries | Applications you did not make |
| Adverse information | Defaults, slow-paying labels and the dates listed |
Anything wrong is worth disputing. A wrong default or an account that is not yours can lower the score and cost you the loan you wanted. Our guides to credit report disputes and removing a default show how.
What does a TransUnion score band mean?
Scores vary by bureau, but TransUnion’s 0 to 999 bands give a useful sense of where you stand:
| Score | Band |
|---|---|
| 767 to 999 | Excellent |
| 681 to 766 | Good |
| 614 to 680 | Favourable |
| 583 to 613 | Average |
| 527 to 582 | Below average |
| 487 to 526 | Unfavourable |
| 0 to 486 | Poor |
Payday loans with bad credit are usually discussed for the lower bands. Your score is a summary, though, and most lenders also look at your bank statements and what you can afford. A score in a low band does not decide the answer by itself.
How can you protect your record while you repay?
Think of the loan period as a small test of your habits:
- Pay on the due date, not a week later. Payment history is the longest-lasting part of your record.
- Do not apply for other credit until this loan is settled. Each application leaves an enquiry for up to a year.
- Check the report a month after you finish to see that the loan shows as settled.
- Dispute errors straight away. A bureau must investigate a dispute, and you can follow up in writing.
If the report still shows a balance after you paid, send the lender’s paid-up letter to the bureau. That is why you keep it.
Can a payday loan with bad credit damage your chances of a home loan or car finance?
It can, if it is paid late or if you rely on one after another. Lenders that offer larger credit look at your recent history and your monthly commitments. A string of short-term loans suggests stress even when each was repaid.
One carefully repaid loan is not a barrier. A pattern is. If you are planning a bigger purchase, borrow less often and let a few clean months pass first. See save for a car for how to plan that kind of purchase.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a payday loan with bad credit?
Some registered lenders consider applicants with weaker records, based on affordability. Approval is not guaranteed and the price may sit near the legal maximum.
Will a payday loan improve my credit score?
It can help if the lender reports and you repay on time, but it is not a reliable way to build credit.
Do multiple applications hurt my record?
Enquiries are recorded for up to a year. Several in a short time can look like stress, so apply carefully.
What if I cannot repay at all?
Contact the lender and, if you have other debts, consider a debt counsellor. See debt review.
How can I see my credit score for free?
Request your free report from the bureaus, and check whether they offer a score. TransUnion, Experian and XDS each give you a free report once a year. See free credit reports.
How long does a bureau take to answer a dispute?
TransUnion says it answers disputes within 21 working days. Keep your reference number and follow up in writing.
