“Blacklisted” in South Africa: What It Really Means

Person with head in hands worried about their credit record
Quick answer: There is no official blacklist in South Africa. Blacklisted is a common word for negative information on your credit record, such as defaults, debt review or unpaid accounts. Lenders decide for themselves how much weight to give it. You can check your record for free once a year.

You hear it everywhere: “I am blacklisted.” The word is dramatic, and it is not quite true.

Understanding what lies behind it shows you what is fixable. Here is the reality of being blacklisted in South Africa.

Is there a blacklist?

No. No central list stops South Africans from getting credit. What exists is a credit record held by the credit bureaus.

It lists accounts, payment history and certain negative items. Each lender decides what weight to give it. Read what a credit bureau does.

What do people usually mean by blacklisted? 5 things

What is saidWhat it actually is
“I was declined”One lender’s decision, based on its rules and your record
“I have a default”A negative listing for missed payments
“I am under debt review”A flag on your record. See debt review
“I have a judgment”A court order. Since 2020, judgments no longer show on credit reports
“I have no record”Not enough history, which is not the same as bad credit

What can limit your credit?

  • Unpaid accounts and defaults.
  • Debt review, which blocks new credit while it lasts.
  • A history of missed payments.
  • Balances close to your limits.
  • Many recent applications.
  • Income that does not support the loan.

How do you find out what lenders see?

Request your free report from each bureau, once every 12 months. See free credit reports.

Read it line by line. Look for accounts you do not recognise and listings you think are wrong.

How long do negative items stay?

The National Credit Regulations set maximum periods. In short, “default” or “slow paying” labels can stay for up to a year or until 14 business days after you settle, and payment history for up to five years.

Debt review flags stay until a clearance certificate is issued.

What can you do if you feel blacklisted?

Be careful with companies that promise to remove your blacklisting for a fee. Accurate information cannot be deleted by anyone, and errors can be disputed for free.

Can you still get a loan if you are blacklisted?

What should you ask a lender that says you are blacklisted?

When a lender declines you and says “you are blacklisted”, it is giving you a label, not a reason. Ask for the details, politely and in writing:

  1. What is the main reason for the decline? You can ask a lender for the main reason it refused credit.
  2. Which credit bureau did you use, and on what date?
  3. Was the problem my record, my income or the affordability of the repayment?

The answers tell you what to fix. A decline for affordability needs a smaller request. A decline for a listing needs a look at your report. A decline for missing documents needs nothing but a better application.

What is your plan for the first seven days?

If you feel blacklisted, do not start with the lender. Start with facts:

DayWhat you do
1Request your free report from each bureau
2List every account and note which are overdue
3Mark entries that look wrong, and gather proof
4Write to the bureau and the provider about any errors
5Call creditors on accurate overdue accounts and ask for a plan in writing
6Set up reminders or debit orders for everything else
7Decide whether you need credit at all in the next three months

By the end of the week you know where you stand. That is more useful than any “blacklist removal” service. See free credit reports and credit report disputes for the steps.

What no longer appears on your record?

Since 2020, civil court judgments and administration orders no longer show on credit reports. If you were told that you were blacklisted because of a judgment, the report may now look different from what you expected, though the underlying accounts can still be listed.

That is worth a check. Some people feel blacklisted because of something that has already dropped off. Your report shows exactly what a lender can see, so read it before you assume the worst.

Which myths about credit records cost people money?

MythWhat is true
“I am blacklisted for life”Entries drop off after their retention periods
“Paying a debt wipes it off at once”It shows as settled, and history can remain for a while
“Banks share a secret list”Lenders use bureau records and their own rules
“A company can remove it for a fee”Only incorrect entries can be corrected, and you can dispute them free

If you are sold any of these, be careful. The most expensive mistake is paying a stranger for something you could do yourself.

Can you still get credit with a negative record?

Some lenders consider people with negative records, usually for smaller amounts or at a higher price within the legal limits. Approval is never guaranteed, and the better move is often to repair the record first.

If you do borrow, check the lender on the NCR register, read the quote and make sure the repayment fits your budget. Our guides to loans while blacklisted and quick loans for bad credit explain what lenders look at.

How long does it take to recover from a negative record?

There is no fixed timetable, but the pattern is steady. Here is a rough guide, not a promise:

AfterWhat often changes
1 to 3 monthsErrors fixed, balances falling, payments on time
6 monthsA clean run of payments appears on your report
12 monthsMany negative labels reach their limit or are updated to settled
Up to 5 yearsOlder payment history drops off

Time does half of the work and your habits do the other half. A lender looking at a record with a bad year followed by a clean year sees a person who has recovered, and that counts for a lot.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be removed from a blacklist?

There is no blacklist. You can correct errors, settle accounts and rebuild your record.

Does being declined mean I am blacklisted?

No. A decline is one lender’s decision. Ask for the reason.

Are judgments still on credit reports?

Not since 2020, but other listings can still appear.

Who can help me?

The credit bureau, the Credit Ombud for disputes, and an NCR-registered debt counsellor if you have several debts.

How do I know if I am blacklisted?

Check your credit reports. If you see defaults or other negative listings, those are what people mean by blacklisted. There is no separate list.

Does being blacklisted stop me from opening a bank account?

A bank account is generally not a credit product, so a poor record does not by itself stop you opening one. Credit facilities such as overdrafts are different.
