If your credit record is weak, a loan you repay in instalments can feel safer than one due on payday.
It can be, but only if you understand what the longer term does to the total cost. This guide explains how installment loans for bad credit work, what lenders look at and how to compare offers.
What is an installment loan?
You borrow a set amount and repay it in equal monthly instalments over an agreed term, often a few months. Each instalment includes part of the capital, plus interest and fees.
Short-term lenders, banks and other credit providers offer them, with different prices and limits. Compared with a once-off payday loan, installment loans for bad credit have smaller instalments, but you stay in debt longer. That trade-off is the whole story.

What does a longer term do to the cost?
Here is a hypothetical example. You borrow R5,000 as a first short-term loan, so the cap is 5% a month on the balance. The initiation fee is R565 and the service fee R60 a month, with VAT on both fees.
Repayments are equal capital amounts, and everything is at the legal maximums.
| Term | Total cost | You repay | About per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 months | R1,357 | R6,357 | R2,119 |
| 6 months | R1,939 | R6,939 | R1,156 |
The 6-month loan feels easier each month, yet it costs about R582 more. The monthly service fee is charged for every month of the term, and interest runs on the balance for longer.
With installment loans for bad credit, choose the shortest term whose instalment you can pay without borrowing again next month. Our pages on 3-month loans and 6-month loans show typical costs side by side.
What do lenders check for installment loans for bad credit?
A registered lender must assess whether you can afford the repayments. A weak record does not automatically rule you out, but it changes the offer. Lenders usually look at:
- Your income and how regular it is.
- Your monthly expenses and existing debt.
- Your recent bank statements, including returned debit orders.
- Whether you have applied for debt review. If you have, you cannot take new credit.
A lower score may mean a smaller amount or a price closer to the legal maximum. It does not mean you are refused every time, and it does not mean you will always be approved.
How can you improve your chances honestly?
- Ask for less. A smaller loan is easier to approve and to repay.
- Show steady income. Three months of clean bank statements help.
- Avoid applying to many lenders at once. Each application can leave a record. See multiple loans.
- Fix small problems first. Clear an overdue account if you can, and check your report for errors. Read how credit scoring works.

Which warning signs should make you walk away?
- Any promise of guaranteed approval. Registered lenders cannot give one.
- A fee demanded before you receive the money.
- A lender missing from the NCR register.
- A refusal to give you the quote that shows the total cost in rand.
What should you do before you accept?
- Get the quote in writing.
- Check the total repayment, the number of instalments and each debit date.
- Make sure the instalment fits your budget with room to spare.
- Ask what it costs to settle early. See settling a loan early.
- Check whether a cheaper source exists: an employer advance, a family bridge or a stokvel.
If you are already behind on other debts, speak to an NCR-registered debt counsellor before you borrow more. Our bad credit loans page explains how lenders treat different credit situations.
Where does the money go in a 6-month installment loan for bad credit?
Here is the R5,000, 6-month example month by month. At the legal maximums, interest is 5% a month on the balance, and the capital is repaid in equal parts of about R833 a month. These are calculations, not quotes.
| Month | Balance at start | Interest at 5% |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | R5,000 | R250 |
| 2 | R4,167 | R208 |
| 3 | R3,333 | R167 |
| 4 | R2,500 | R125 |
| 5 | R1,667 | R83 |
| 6 | R833 | R42 |
Total interest is about R875. The fees do not shrink in the same way: the initiation fee is R565, the service fee is R60 for each of the six months (R360), and VAT on those fees is about R139. Those add up to about R1,064.
So even though the interest falls as you repay, fees make up more than half of the total cost. That is why installment loans for bad credit can look affordable monthly and still cost a lot overall.
How do you choose the right term for installment loans for bad credit?
Use the instalment, not the total, as the first filter. Then check the total.
- Work out how much you can repay each month without borrowing again. See loan affordability.
- Ask for a quote at two or three terms.
- Pick the shortest term whose instalment fits with some room to spare.
- If only the longest term fits, ask whether a smaller amount would work.
Here is a hypothetical comparison for a R3,000 loan at the legal maximums.
| Term | Total cost | About per month |
|---|---|---|
| 1 month | R639 | R3,639 |
| 3 months | R927 | R1,309 |
| 6 months | R1,359 | R726 |
If R726 fits your budget and R1,309 does not, six months may be the only workable choice. If R1,309 fits, three months saves about R432.
What if an instalment becomes unaffordable halfway through?
Do not wait for the debit to fail. Take these steps:
- Contact the lender before the due date and explain what changed.
- Ask in writing about a new date, a reduced payment or restructuring the loan.
- Keep paying what you can, and keep proof of every payment.
- If several debts are slipping, speak to a registered debt counsellor. Note that applying for debt review stops you taking new credit. See debt review.
A missed instalment on installment loans for bad credit can be reported to the credit bureaus. Acting early limits the damage to your record and the extra charges.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get an installment loan with a bad credit score?
Some registered lenders consider applicants with weak credit, depending on income and affordability. The offer may be smaller or more expensive, and approval is not guaranteed.
Is an installment loan cheaper than a payday loan?
Not necessarily. Each instalment is smaller, but a longer term can raise the total cost. Compare the total repayment, not the instalment.
Will an installment loan improve my credit record?
If the lender reports your repayments and you pay on time, it can help. Missed payments can hurt it.
What if I cannot afford an instalment?
Contact the lender before you miss the payment and ask for options. The Credit Ombud is a free route if you have a dispute.
Are installment loans for bad credit cheaper than payday loans?
Not necessarily. The monthly amount is lower, but a longer term adds service fees and interest. Compare total repayment, not instalment size.
Can I settle an installment loan early?
Yes. You have the right to settle early, and the lender must give you a settlement figure. Check what the figure includes before you pay.
