01What this means for a matching service
"Responsible lending" is a duty the law places on credit providers. Instant Fund is not a credit provider. We are a free service that matches your application to NCR-registered lenders who do carry that duty. So this page is not us claiming to lend responsibly, because we do not lend at all.
What we can be responsible for is the matching, and for being honest with you about borrowing. That means three things: we only refer you to lenders who are legally required to check you can afford the loan, we are straight with you about when a loan is a bad idea, and we point you to free help if credit has already become a problem. The rest of this page sets out each one.
02The affordability check
Every lender on our panel is registered with the National Credit Regulator, and under Section 81 of the National Credit Act they must run an affordability assessment before they lend to you. That check looks at what you earn, what you already owe, and what you spend, and confirms there is room to repay the new loan without pushing you under.
This is the law working in your favour. A lender that approves you without checking affordability is breaking the rules, and we do not refer to lenders like that. If a matched lender declines you on affordability grounds, that is not the system failing you. It is the system doing its job, telling you the loan would have stretched you too far.
03What we do, and don't do
Our part in keeping borrowing responsible is narrow but real.
We do refer you only to NCR-registered lenders. We show indicative costs upfront so you are not surprised. We carry the honest carve-outs on our product pages, including the warnings about when a loan is the wrong call. We keep this help directory current. And the matching service is free to you, so we are never charging a struggling borrower for the privilege.
We do not decide whether you get a loan, set what it costs, or collect repayments. Those sit with the matched lender. We also do not give you financial advice tailored to your situation. If you need that, the help directory below points to people who can.
04Before you borrow, ask these
Four questions worth answering honestly before you sign anything.
- Do I actually need this, or do I just want it? A car repair that gets you to work is a need. Most other things can wait for payday.
- How exactly will I repay it? If the answer is "from my salary," fine. If the answer is "I'll figure it out," stop.
- What happens to my budget while I'm repaying? Map the instalment against rent, food and your other debit orders. If something has to give, the loan is too big.
- Is this the cheapest way to solve the problem? A family loan, an employer advance, or simply waiting a few days often costs nothing. A loan never does.
05Signs you may be over-indebted
Over-indebtedness creeps up. If a few of these sound like you, it is worth pausing before taking on more credit.
You are taking new loans to repay old ones.
Your debit orders empty the account before the month is out.
You borrow every month just to cover normal expenses.
You have stopped opening statements or answering calls from creditors.
You are skipping essentials like food or transport to make repayments.
The thought of your debt keeps you up at night.
If you recognise yourself here, another loan is not the fix. A free debt counsellor is. The directory below is where to start.
06When not to borrow
We would rather lose your application than match you into a loan that hurts you. Please do not borrow when:
- You are already under debt review. By law, NCR-registered lenders cannot extend you new credit, and taking it elsewhere makes your situation worse.
- You cannot clearly see how you will repay it from your income.
- You are borrowing to repay another short-term loan. That is the start of a cycle that gets expensive fast.
- The expense can wait until payday. Waiting is free.
- You are borrowing for someone else who could not get approved themselves. Their risk becomes your debt.
07If you are already struggling
If you are behind on payments or drowning in debit orders, the most useful thing you can do is talk to someone free and qualified, today, before it gets worse. There is no shame in it. Debt review and debt counselling exist precisely for this, and they are designed to protect you, not punish you.
A registered debt counsellor reviews your whole financial picture, talks to your creditors on your behalf, and arranges a single affordable monthly payment. While you are under debt review you are protected from legal action by creditors. The first consultation is usually free.
